Exploitative Patterns in Games
A research primer and reference library of 66 exploitative, deceptive, and harmful design patterns in games, each graded for severity and evidence.
Exploitative Patterns in Games catalogues the design patterns that take money, time, data, and attention from players, from loot boxes to forced registration. Each of its 66 patterns carries a severity rating, an evidence level, and resolvable sources. The primer grew out of the taxonomy working group at Dagstuhl Seminar 26261, Harms in Digital Games, with Scott Bateman, Alena Denisova, Sara Grimes, Celia Hodent, Vero Vanden Abeele, Jennifer R. Whitson, and Bieke Zaman. Its content is licensed CC BY 4.0.
