Deceptive design in VR

Mitigating privacy harms from deceptive design in virtual reality.

Virtual reality headsets track bodies, voices, and surroundings, which raises the stakes when an interface nudges people into sharing more than they intend. Funded by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, this project identified deceptive design patterns in VR and ways to reduce their privacy harms. Outputs include Deceived by Immersion, Immersive Invaders, and the DIS 2026 Best Paper Rushed by Discomfort, Trapped by Immersion.
